Chapter 1 - (The Circle of) Life Goes On
2023-09-10T03:27:40Z

Ketekh:

The Circle of Life turns ceaselessly and we all get caught up in the motions of it in one way or another. So, too, do the lions of Pride Rock.

As we begin a new chapter in our little corner of the world, big changes are coming for the Pride Lands. When the current King and his mate step aside and head out on a new adventure, their son finds himself suddenly thrust into the spotlight – a day he knew was coming, but like many of us when it comes to life-changing events on the horizon, it's one whose arrival for which he could never truly be prepared...

* Week 1: A tenuous friendship is born
* Week 2: A new king takes the throne
* Week 3: Ahadi receives unexpected news
* Week 4: Plans are made to reach out to the neighbors

To Start Up With: This little guide is a production of rather liberal flow of thought and therefore some may find it disagreeable in terms of order of presentation for instance. Generally it is meant to be a source for miscellaneous information regarding gameplay on The Lion King MUCK ( muck.tlkmuck.org 7675 ) in order to help people get started with it, should they be interested (they should!). Program used to connect to the MUCK here is MUSHclient.

-- Talfasi, a TLKMUCK resident. (11.4.2008)

Chapter I: Connecting & Finding your way around!
TLKMUCK is a roleplaying game system dedicated to the world of The Lion King. Therefore the characters in it are those of African wildlife and the locations are based on the movie or just otherwise in the same theme. The specialty of a MUCK is that it is a real-time system specifically built for the needs of RP and therefore it is a way more advanced (and comfortable) way to RP than using forums or instant messengers. Personally I've RP'ed here for quite a while, although taking 'breaks' of several years in between here and there - that is just my freakish personality though ;) One thing is consistent though, I've always found it a great place to RP, and there's plenty of that available there even now!

Upon connecting, you should be greeted with this screen:

:Talstart.png

To connect to the MUCK you need to type in your character name and your password, to obtain a character simply follow the on-screen instructions that will guide you through the process. After that is done, you're taken into a set up of this kind:

:Talingame.png

This is the basic layout of the game. You are in a room, that has a description and exits that you can take. To view the room description again, you can type look. The window will also show if there are others in the room (there is none where I am), and basically you can use the directions and go explore. It is however usable to see the bigger picture, and for instance see where you are. For that there is the single most useful command on the MUCK. The find (or simply 'f'). Typing it will bring the next window:

:Talfindlist2.png

As you can see, this window shows a great deal of information. I find myself typing 'f' almost every 5 minutes, simply because I'm curious like that! First of all, you can see all the people who are currently connected, their character names, their idle time, species, status and their location. This screen can be used as a guide to see where there is RP in progress, who to talk to, etc.

When traveling, it is useful to know that you can always return to a safe haven called the OOC Complex which can be accessed by the command OOCC. From there you will find in-game boards (such as for character requests), the offices of the wizards and such, but most importantly - from the Hall of Beginnings and Player Start you can access most of the biggest lands in the game directly, to help where you might want to go to.

Remember: When finding yourself lost, or wishing you were elsewhere: You can always return to the OOC Complex and continue from there. Also, by default, the Player Start of the OOC Complex is your home location which you can return to by typing GOHOME. To find out how to change your home location to something of your preference, contact a member of the helpstaff or a wizard (command STAFF will show you which of them are online).

Chapter II: Communication and Roleplay!
The Lion King MUCK has several means of communication. To look into the most common forms, we can use the above picture of the find-list as reference. When engaging in RP, you can find your way into a room where such is happening. Before that though, you might want to talk to the people there first. This can be done by paging. For instance, you see me on the list, you could do this:

page Talfasi = Hi! I read your guide. It gave me headaches!

.. and that would return "YourCharacterName pages, "Hi! I read your guide. It gave me headaches!" on my screen.

And, you can be more artistic and use page-pose, like:

page Talfasi =: pokes you in the shoulder, ".. and I won't forgive you for it!"

.. which would make "In a page-pose to you, YourCharacterName pokes you in the shoulder, ".. and I won't forgive you for it!" appear on my screen. :)

The MUCK also has a mailing system called muck-mail which allows you to send mail messages to other players in the game, e-mail-stylishly. To send a mail directly to a player, type mail playername, or simply mail to access the system.

Also, remember to check out the status tags of other people. It will tell what they are doing.

IC = In Character, the player is or is supposed to be roleplaying! :)

OOC = Out-of-Character, he's just chit-chatting around.

LRP = Looking-For-Roleplay

and AFK, BRB.. etc. STF / WIZ tags hint that the player is helpstaff or wizard-body.

To change the status for yourself, simply type in the tag of your wish, ie. IC

So!

Let's say you've asked someone to RP with you, and he/she's agreed. Often the case is that you are not yet in the same location. To get together without a huge amount of traveling, you can try the command jump to jump directly to the other player's location. Remember to ask if it's okay first. However, as so many of the rooms are marked so that you can't directly jump into them, there is a summoning system.

Typing mjoin 'playername', you request to join another player in their location. He/She is then prompted to accept or decline your request. Alternatively, you can type msummon 'playername' to request the other party to join you at your location.

Good! Now let's look into the scenario where you're together in the same room with other people. This is where you naturally roleplay. That and general messaging in one room can be done through posing and spoofing.

For instance, typing:

pose is laying down on the ground, idly looking across the savannahs and having hunch of an itch on his left shoulder

Would make YourCharacterName is laying down on the ground, idly looking across the savannahs and having hunch of an itch on his left shoulder appear on everyone's screen to read.

And..

SPOOF A lion is laying down on the ground, idly looking across the savannahs and having hunch of an itch on his left shoulder

Would make others see A lion is laying down on the ground, idly looking across the savannahs and having hunch of an itch on his left shoulder

It is that easy! :)

Chapter III: Character Description and Related!
Considering a RP environment relies heavily on descriptions, it /would/ be preferable for you to set a description of your character for others to read amongst other things!

In-game, you can check descriptions of objects and other players by typing look and then the target. When it comes to characters it's also possible to set a message for its scent that players can access through the command smell too.

You can set these by typing in:

SETUP

This should pop in a window with various choices, including an editor where to type in your character description. Let your creativity flow! :)

You might notice other players having little tags after their names when in a room, like:

:Talatpose.png

To set one for yourself, type in @pose me=your desired tag. Whoa, all done there! Remember that it's added directly after your character name, so using separation with a comma like in Mwenge's case is preferable.

Also, as a little fun detail you can set in a tag of similar kind in a bigger list for other players to read. When typing who you should see a list of this kind:

:Talwholist.png

To set a tag of this kind for yourself, type in wd s: your desired tag. Check check.

Besides all these, you can also insert in-detail In- and Out-Of-Character information such as contact details for yourself for others to see by using the Player Information system. This is accessed by typing pinfo playername, if the target has written something in it, you should see it. To set these fields for yourself, type in pinfo #help and it will list the commands.

Chapter IV: Additional goodies!
The MUCK has a lot of different commands to use, here's a couple that might be usable. There are plenty of others, part of the fun is learning yourself! The wiz/helpstaff can be bugged for additional information that you might feel like needing!

carry will let you, well.. as it says, carry another person. This can be used if you want to take someone somewhere for instance. Typing in carry #help will let you find out more about it! Useful in certain situations.

wel is another fun tool. It stands for "Who else" and as it states it will list people who are in a target room, regardless whether they're online or not. So, type in a character name after it like wel charactername and you should see a listing of the people in the character's room. I'm a home-made sherlock so I find myself using this often. ;)

contimes will let you to see a statistic about another person's connection habits. It will show when the target has connected and for how long in a neat little window. Many people who are aware of this feature have it disabled (go figure? Me too sometimes.. *grins*). contimes #help will tell you more about it like usual. :)

Well, like said before. The place is filled with things that I likely fail to mention - but as the topic states the intention of this little page is meant to be a small guide into the world of RP in Lion King -oriented setting in TLKMUCK. I hope it was of some use - and remember: when in doubt, bug a helpstaff member or a wiz, that's what they're there for (command: STAFF).

Thanks for reading and happy roleplaying!

Your friendly ROGUE-FOR-LIFE leonine neighbor,

Content & Rating
TLKMuck is considered a PG-13 rated environment at all times. This includes both public and private rooms. Our MUCK is intended to be an enjoyable environment in which to experience the setting and adventures seen in Disney's "The Lion King" by anyone from thirteen to one hundred thirteen. Because of this, sexually explicit content and activities have no appropriate location within our system. See below for clarification regarding sexual content on TLKMuck.

Harassment
Absolutely NO harassment or threatening of another player will be tolerated. This includes stealing or altering the objects of others without permission. Basically, do unto others as you would have done to you. This also includes trying to force players into killing off their character, forcing life-altering changes to a player's character without their prior approval, and/or pages of an inappropriate nature (threatening, foul language, sexual remarks, etc).

Accounts
You may only log onto ONE account -- the account you first create on the MUCK. Players are limited to a total of thirty characters -- one primary and twenty-nine alternates. This limit may be raised or lowered at the discretion of the administration. Zombies are not allowed on TLKMuck.

When applying for a character, you will be asked to provide your full (first AND last) real name, a valid email address, and your date of birth. This information is confidential and not shared with anyone on the MUCK except for the system administrators.

Failure to fully complete the application will result in the application for a character being denied.

Falsification of information is grounds for immediate termination of your account.

Characters will be able to idle for 90 days. After this point the characters may be deleted. Deletions will occur at the discretion of the Administrators and characters may be allowed to idle longer than the limits specified here. Two weeks notice will be given before an idle purge takes place. Characters deleted during a purge cannot be recovered.

Mucker Bits
NO player will receive an M3. Period. M2s will only be given out to those who have proven they have a decent grasp of programming and have displayed a specific need for an M2.

If you have a program that requires a higher authority level than you have, have the Programming Wizard look through it. If the program is acceptable, s/he will @chown it and set it to the proper flag--you will not maintain ownership of it.

Spying And Cameras
Anything that transfers poses/says/etc to another room/player must be PLAINLY VISIBLE and preferably have a warning attached when you enter the room.

Cybersex/ Tinysex
Cybersex is defined as sexual activity that takes place via online communication. Tinysex is cybersex that takes place on systems running TinyMUCK software (such as TLKMuck). This includes RolePlay as well as the text equivalent of "phone sex."

Cybersex has no appropriate venue on TLKMuck and as such, the administration does not condone content of this nature within our system. There are (and have always been) systems in place that logs the activities of everyone who connects to the MUCK.

Whenever a complaint is logged regarding sexual activity on TLKMuck, the administrators will immediately begin an investigation into the activities of the players in question. Investigations can include monitoring future activities on the MUCK of those involved in the complaint, a review of past actions already taken, and any other methods as deemed appropriate by the wizards.

Punishment for violations of this rule will be determined by the wizards and can be anything from a warning up to and including a permanent ban from TLKMuck and its systems.

If it is discovered during an investigation that such activity occurred outside of a private room, or if any of the participants are under the age of eighteen, all participants will be immediately and permanently banned from TLKMuck.

If in the course of the investigation it is discovered that a player is connecting to TLKMuck for the sole purpose of pursuing sexual activity, they will be banned from our systems permanently. Those who are seeking to fulfil their sexual desires online should direct their energies to seeking out an appropriate venue for such activities.

Violations of this section include, but are not limted to, connecting to TLKMuck to lure players to other locations for sexual activity, inappropriate or suggestive pages/whispers/etc, and advertising adult-themed MUCKs in any way.

Do not troll TLKMuck for virtual bedfellows. It will not be tolerated!

Names And Species
All species must be found on the continent of Africa for a character to be created. Species from Madagascar, having no natural feasible way to reach
the mainland, are not allowed. Extinct species will not be created, regardless of the reason for the extinction.

We will be fairly lenient regarding names, but names such as "Joe" and "Sam" will not be accepted.

Healers And Magic
Magic is not allowed on TLKMuck. You cannot summon a lightning bolt from the heavens to save you in a losing battle, for example.

Players are welcome to roleplay healer characters if they wish, however if a task requires opposable thumbs, then your character must have opposable thumbs. Finding creative ways around this rule is welcome and encouraged as long as it furthers the roleplay and is 'believable' in style.

The Lion King And Man
As far as the Muck is concerned, humans do not exist.

With that in mind, we do not want to see any man-made weapons, collars, jewelry, tombstones, etc or references to such.

Good Taste
General silliness is not a problem, but keep good taste in mind. Do not name rooms offensively, since they can be seen by the entire MUCK on the find list. Do not create disrespectful objects. Do not page people you don't know with indecent comments.

This is a friendly MUCK, and while not everyone can get along with everyone else, there is no need for an inhospitable atmosphere. Above all, use good judgment.

Administration
The administrators of the MUCK are the ultimate authority regarding activities and actions surrounding our game. Polls, votes, or other solicitations made by non-administrators are not official and should not be construed as such.

Attempts to impersonate the administrators or to administer rules in their stead is prohibited and will be punished appropriately.

Realms Covered by these Rules
Any electronic communications associated with TLKMuck are subject to these rules, including (but not limited to) the MUCK itself, emails between players regarding the MUCK, and the MUCK's forums.

Scope
These rules are not all encompassing and should not be construed as such. We cannot possibly cover every issue within these rules. Accordingly, the following "Master Rule" shall apply: If in doubt, ask an Administrator. Do not assume you know the answer if you haven't asked an Admin.

Punishment
Punishment for violating any of these rules can be anything up to and including being banned permanently from our servers. Punishment will be determined by the Administrators.

Questions regarding these rules should be directed to the Head Wizard, Ketekh, via email at ketekh_AT_tlkMUCK.org.

v1.0 - 08/22/2019

TLKMuck Feature Character Rules
Feature Character Definition
For the purposes of this document and the MUCK in general, a Feature Character (FC) is defined as any character named on-screen in any of the officially released, theatrical movies, television productions, or other studio-produced/sanctioned media/outlets (including, but not limited to online media, the Broadway production, and electronic or printed books) - also known as story 'canon'. FC status can also be designated for non-canon characters as deemed necessary by the Wizards for the purposes of filling supporting cast roles and/or to ensure continuity of story arcs.

The goal of our Feature Characters is to explore the story that is not seen in the movies by expanding on the events that are only hinted at - or left out entirely. Where did Scar get his nickname? Who is Nala's father? What was life like as a cub for Mufasa, Sarabi, Scar, and the others? And so on...

Feature Characters are not owned by the player who is filling the role and the role can be recast at any time, with or without notice, for any reason by the agreement of two or more Wizards. Because these characters are less extensions of oneself and more a role to play (such as in a stage production, on television, or in a movie), the regularly accepted levels of "personal freedom" may not apply to Feature Character roles.

While the intent is to allow a great level of freedom in playing these characters, Feature Character players may not engage in behavior that would cause the character to stray from the established story arc. For example, Mufasa cannot kill Sarabi nor could he engage in a conflict with a non-Feature Character pride that would lead to his death or receive scars not in evidence in the aforementioned canon venues. Additionally, non-feature characters who wish to engage in conflict with the Feature Characters must coordinate the event with the Wizards in order to ensure the integrity of the story arc is maintained.

Feature Character authority
Feature Characters will not be granted the authority to make or interpret MUCK policy or resolve non-In-Character conflicts between players. While Feature Characters may at times be played by Wizards, any policy changes will be made public by the Wizard Character and not the Feature Character. Feature Characters will only have the level of In-Character authority generally accepted for the character's station in life. In other words, a King or Queen of a pride will have IC authority of those in their lands, but a cub would have little authority - much like Simba during the "I Just Can't Wait to be King" sequence (despite his proclamations to the contrary!).

Feature Character Casting Process
In the past, the Wizards have used open casting calls for filling the roles of Feature Characters. Because of lower average connection numbers and in the interest of expediency, open casting calls may not be used going forward. Feature Characters may be played by the Wizards, selected staff, and invited players.

This process may change as time goes on. Any changes will be posted to the MOTD and/or the website. If the website is used (due to space constraints), an MOTD will be used to reference the appropriate page on the website.

Feature Character Connection Requirements
Feature Characters must connect regularly and must participate in story arc events that happen weekly. When story arc events involve a given Feature Character, that character must be online and an active participant of the event. When a story arc event is not in progress, connection requirements are less strict, but the Feature Character players should endeavor to connect as much as possible during 'prime time' (5 PM to 8 PM Pacific) to interact with non-Feature Characters. Failure to consistently meet this requirement is grounds for dismissal from the cast.

Feature Character Story Arcs
Story Arc terminology
*Story Arc is the term used to reference an ongoing plot line that will cover several months or years.
*Chapter is the term used to reference events of the Story Arc which occur during a given calendar month.
*Event is the term used to reference sub-chapter events that occur on a Friday or Saturday night between one and five times a month (depending on FC player availability, real life holiday constraints, and other outside influences). Events will be scheduled and posted to the website at the beginning of each calendar month so that players will know when to expect important Feature Character activities on the MUCK.
Story Arc timeline
*The Story Arc is a multi-year arc that has been planned out in advance to provide a framework for storytelling on the MUCK without constraining our players to a fixed script.
*Story Arc Chapters will be released monthly. Chapter Introductions will be posted the night before the 1st Friday of the month in which the Chapter will occur while Chapter Summaries will be posted by the end of the 1st Sunday of the month after which events occurred so that players who are unable to connect for a short period can get caught up on missed events. In other words, the November Introduction will be posted on October 31 while the November Summary will be posted by December 8.
*Story Arc major events will be listed at the end of the Chapter Introduction but to avoid 'spoilers', details will not be publicly available. In other words, the end of a Chapter Introduction might look like this:
**Week 1: Simba's Presentation
**Week 2: Simba's first public appearance
**Week 3: Simba's first trip to the waterhole
**Week 4: Simba vs the Rhino
NOTE: Major events that are included with Chapter Introductions may be adjusted for pacing and may occur later than originally planned. Under the Baobab will be updated as these decisions are made.
Story Arc concept discussion
*As mentioned above, a Story Arc is intended to provide a framework for storytelling on the MUCK by describing the major events that must occur and the times in which they should occur.
*Major events are considered 'fixed' events and will reference keystone moments from the films (such as Mufasa's death, Nala and Simba's reunion, etc.). These events cannot be modified and must occur in order for the story arc to continue. For example, Mufasa is killed by Scar, therefore Scar cannot die before Mufasa. Attempting to role play Scar's death prior to the fixed event of Mufasa's death would lead to the FC player in control of Scar being dismissed from the cast and another player chosen to fill the role.
*Non-fixed events are open to interpretation as long as the interpretation does not conflict with the above rules.
Logging of Feature Character Interactions
Interactions with the FCs are logged by the FC players to facilitate compilation of the month-end chapter. These are room-level logs and not server-level logs. By entering a room with a Feature Character you are giving consent for your poses, remarks, and other actions to be logged and published at a later date.

What do you mean by 're-launch'?
In the past, we've used the term 'reset' in regards to adjusting the timeline of the Feature Characters. This had an undesirable ripple effect across the MUCK forcing existing groups of players to adjust their role play to fit the new timeline. This often resulted in players having to role play meeting a Feature Character for the first time, even though their personal history might include a long-standing relationship with the aforementioned Feature Character.

By using the term 're-launch', we hope to convey the concept that we are introducing a new Feature Character story arc without disrupting the plots our existing groups are already enjoying.

So you're re-introducing Feature Characters. Isn't that the same thing as resetting the timeline? I knew Simba/Mufasa/Ahadi/Mohatu/etc. years ago, so meeting him again is not going to mesh with my In-Character history.
The best way we can explain this is to point out that you might have known a 'John Smith' in grade school and then met a different 'John Smith' in college. They weren't the same person, but it didn't cause you any distress!

Our new Feature Characters can (and will!) share the names of previous Feature Characters, but they are not the same and you should treat them as strangers the first time you meet them!

The Chapter 1 introduction doesn't mention Simba/Nala/Mufasa/Sarabi/etc. Why not? Aren't they the Feature Characters?
They are indeed Feature Characters. The term originally referred to characters that were featured in the movie and has been expanded to refer to any characters that are instrumental to the core plot of the MUCK. Feature Characters are treated differently than Player Characters in that they can be recast if necessary. A Player Character would not be subject to such an action.

The story arc has been written to allow us to (eventually) reintroduce the aforementioned Feature Characters in a way that doesn't cause a jarring reset of the timeline for the rest of the MUCK. We're going to explore the history and ancestry of the characters from the movie - to see what guided their grandparents and parents as they made their way through the Circle of Life - by introducing them as if they were living their lives now and not simply having them appear suddenly.

Is this an alternate reality or what?
This is the same 'reality' our MUCK has been experiencing for several years. The timeline isn't being reset and history isn't being rewritten. As mentioned in the chapter introduction, Mohatu and Tetema arrived at Pride Rock seeking shelter, built a pride, and are now ready to move on and leave Pride Rock in the paws of their son. If the walls of Pride Rock could talk, they would surely tell the latest pride some interesting stories of days gone by involving Mtukutu, Simba, Kisasian, and the others!

Why wasn't there a casting call for the new Feature Characters?
Casting calls in the past have rarely succeeded in filling all open positions. The Wizards felt it would be easier to get the new story arc launched by filling the roles themselves or by inviting players to fill the roles without putting out a casting call.

Does this mean casting calls will never happen again?
Not at all! Our hope is that the re-launch will generate interest in participating in the story arc. As interest grows and players express a desire to play a Feature Character, we will reevaluate our position and put out casting calls as needed.

What do you mean by story arc?
'Story arc' is the term we're using to describe the long-term plan for our Feature Characters. It is composed of many smaller plots that link together to weave a story for our players.

What do you mean by chapter?
A 'chapter' refers to a one-month slice of the story arc. Each month, on the Friday evening of the first weekend of that month, a new chapter introduction will be posted to the website. The written chapter for the prior month will also be posted so players can remain in touch with the story arc, even if they haven't been online recently.

If you're posting chapters every month, doesn't that mean the players won't have anything to role play? Won't they just be following a script?
Hardly! The story arc describes the major events our Feature Characters must experience, but everything else is open to interpretation, exploration, and creativity!

Why haven't you posted the details of the story arc? Why only a chapter introduction each month? (Insert other story-related questions here!)
If we posted the story arc or entire chapters at the beginning of the month, that would take the surprise out of it!

As mentioned above, the story arc describes the major events and not every detail. We won't know what happened in the chapter itself until the end of the month, which is why it won't be posted until then.

Why now? The movie is over twenty-five years old at this point.
Now seems to be the perfect time! The CGI movie premiered recently and has renewed interest in our beloved universe.

Can I role play with the Feature Characters?
Absolutely! You'll need to make sure your presence in the area makes sense or is explainable. Also be prepared for their moods to match their situation. Read through the chapter introduction(s) so you have context within which to work as you begin to role play with them.

Can I have Out of Character discussions with the Feature Characters?
Yes, but try to keep Out of Character chatter to a minimum. The Feature Players are here to role play their Feature Characters and Out of Character chat will distract them from that goal.

When I logged off, I was in the same room with the Feature Characters! Now I'm at Player Start (or wherever your home is linked)! Why was I swept?
Time doesn't move in a 1:1 ratio for our Feature Characters. In other words, one day for their players might be a week for the characters. While this is how role play has always worked on TLKMuck, it may be even more accelerated than our players are accustomed to experiencing.

The Feature Characters will jump ahead one or more days or even weeks as needed to keep the role play flowing. Ahadi's cubhood, for example, will be abbreviated in this manner so that he'll quickly reach Simba's age from the beginning of the first movie. This will give him a better opportunity to participate in the plot.

Because of this, the Feature Characters or Wizards may sweep you from where you were to prevent confusion if you awaken in the middle of a scene that's taking place "further down the road" than when you disconnected.

How are the full chapters written? Are the server logs analyzed?
No, server logs are not retrieved in order to compile the month-end full chapter updates. The Feature Character players log their sessions locally and Ketekh will use those to compile the full chapters. Because of this, by entering a room with a Feature Character you are giving consent for your poses, remarks, and other actions to be logged and published at a later date if needed as part of the full chapter update.

Will the story arc involve The Lion Guard?
The Lion Guard is fanciful take on the Lion King lore with a bit of a creative license used to make it more appealing to Disney Junior viewers, which involves concepts and characters that will likely not be woven into the MUCK's lore.

I have a question not answered here. How do I ask it?
First, check out the FC Rules. If you still have questions, MUCKmail Ketekh or send him an [mailto:ketekh@tlkmuck.org email].

Good evening, everyone.

For those of you who've been around for several years, this will sound similar to the same basic announcement I made back in 2011 regarding our Feature Characters.

One of the most common questions the wizards get asked surrounds the future of the MUCK. It's not surprising that some would be concerned given the age of the MUCK and the decline in average connections we've seen over the last decade. So, before I go any further, let me reassure you that the MUCK is not going anywhere and there are no plans to wind down operations whatsoever.

With that out of the way, it's time for me to make an announcement – and it's not a little announcement, in magnitude or length. Before you read any further, do me a favor and get comfortable. This will take a bit of explaining and I ask that you read the announcement, the accompanying FAQ, and the other information I've posted before making a judgment about the changes. Below, I'll provide details about the announcement and share my thought processes with you so you'll (hopefully) understand why we're doing this now.

Tonight, we are re-launching our Feature Characters and introducing a story arc that is designed to play out over the next couple of years. Yes, I said years. Yes, I said that in 2011, but we're hopeful the release of The Lion King (2019) will help reinvigorate interest in the story.

Before anyone gets up in arms about the previous two sentences (again!), let me emphasize the word I used: "re-launching". I did not use the term "resetting" and I never mentioned timelines. We are not resetting the timeline. We are not disrupting anyone's personal history and we're not playing with temporal distortions or parallel universes. The goal is to introduce new characters that accomplish several goals: they fill the role of Feature Character; they allow us to tell the history of "The Lion King" without changing timelines; and they give us the opportunity to reinvigorate the MUCK with new stories, new blood, and new players. This is word-for-word what I said in 2011, so it requires a minor adjustment: We will be leaping forward from the plot that was introduced then to a later point in the same story arc. The only changes will be the departure of Mohatu and Tetema, with Ahadi and Uru stepping up as the new king and queen of Pride Rock. Since they've been idle for several years, these four are the only characters involved in the leap forward and the change shouldn't be earth-shattering for other players.

The new characters being introduced tonight are an adult Ahadi, aging forward from adolescence, and his mate Uru, an adult lioness – also aging forward from adolescence. They, along with Mawe, Jiwe, and Niktu will be the small pride seen and role-playing at Pride Rock shortly. This first weekend in September, Mohatu will be around but preparing to depart now that his son is ready to take over as King. All of this backstory is posted on the Under the Baobab page – please visit that and get up to speed on the "new history" of Pride Rock before going In Character.

At first glance, and from an Out Of Character standpoint, this will appear to be a case of history repeating itself. Some of you may remember interacting with Mohatu or Ahadi, but while these characters share the names of those who've been on the MUCK in the past, they are not the same characters. Yes, Ahadi will have sons named Mufasa and Taka at some future point, but how they get to that point and the adventures they experience will not be the same. This is much the same as having two John Smiths in a family - great-grandfather and great-grandson for example. Related? Yes. Same name? Definitely. Same history? Nope.

Our goal is to allow us to tell anew the tale of what happened before The Lion King in order to set things up to relive the events of the movie itself in as organic and undisruptive a manner as is possible.

I'd like to take a moment and discuss the other two important points I mentioned in the announcement: the "story arc" and the length of time it covers (yes, I really did say "years").

I chose the term "story arc" because I've put together an over-arching storyline that weaves together a history for our characters and ultimately gets us back to a world with Simba and our other beloved characters in it. I've worked with Jioni and Wanachi to include tips of our hats to previous fan fiction and some of the available information from Disney, but the only sources we're considering to be truly "canon" are the 1994 and 2019 Lion King motion pictures and Simba's Pride.

The "story arc" itself is a multi-year framework of events that will guide the activities of the Feature Characters. It's not scripted and it's not fleshed out. This was done on purpose to give our Feature Character Players the opportunity to exercise creative license while helping keep them on course.

I've broken the "story arc" down into a series of chapters. Each month, by the Friday evening of the first weekend of that month, a new chapter introduction will be posted to the website. At the same time, a fully fleshed out chapter describing the events of the ending month will be posted. This should allow causal players to keep up with the goings on in the Pride Lands.

Some of you may object to this no matter what I say. I can understand that. Were I seeing things from the other side of the screen, I might even agree with you. We have three alternatives at this point aside from the path I've chosen for us: Leave the Pride Lands empty; allow Player Characters to move in; or shut down the MUCK. For me, none of those are viable options and re-launching our Feature Characters has me, once again, more excited about our MUCK than I have been in a very long time.

I've posted FC Re-Launch FAQs, new FC Rules, and a relaunched Under the Baobab page. Please read through these pages as I hope they will answer many of the questions you'll have regarding this announcement. If not, feel free to MUCKmail me or send an email to ketekh@tlkmuck.org.

I hope you are all as excited about these changes as I am!

See you in the Pride Lands!

The seasons passed, as seasons do, and the pair of young friends grew closer with each turn of the Circle. Ahadi and Uru lived through the trials and tribulations that most cubs face with only a few close calls, bumps, and scrapes for their troubles. Their shared adventures served to strengthen their bond and emboldened them whenever they adventured together.
Mohatu, on the other paw, was able to focus more and more on leading his little ragtag pride.
When he wasn't learning how to be a King by doing, Mohatu tried to spend any spare moment mending his relationship with Tetema, but the lioness was not interested in being the Queen of a pride - any pride at all - and tended to keep her distance, both emotionally and physically. The time he spent traveling back and forth from Pride Rock to his mate's chosen refuge began to wear on the lion, ageing him before his time and leaving him with a gaunt frame thanks to his refusal to eat properly.

Time stands still for nobody. No matter how much it pains us, time's inexorable march ushers in good news along with the bad.

For Mohatu, the family's fifth month in Pride Rock dawns with a number of difficulties. The lingering rift between he and his mate make day-to-day life difficult. Despite his concern with his ability to protect his family, Mohatu is finding a growing responsibility to the legion of others who have found a home at Pride Rock. He is only one lion, after all, and any significant threat could put an end to the whole group. Nonetheless, the lion is having a difficult time not taking on the burden of being their protector and he knows the presence of the cubs helps to ease his son's heartache over his absent mother.

Mohatu's sorrow and despair, however, grow deeper with each day that passes. Tetema's continued absence makes him wonder if his son is going to grow up the product of a broken home. In the meantime, the lioness has taken up residence under a large baobab tree in the southeastern part of the lands. The savannah offers ample prey, but is fairly scant on company. Tetema's attempts to put the past behind her have proven difficult and she struggles to come to terms with the fact that the large monolith is now their home.

---

As is typical with most cubs, each day finds Ahadi and Uru getting bolder and more adventurous. As danger looms on the horizon, will near-tragedy serve to unite the small family, or be the final straw in an already strained relationship?

Truer words have likely never been spoken. For our trio of lions and their ever-present cheetah companion, life never stopped throwing new challenges their way. Although nothing seemed to surpass the slaughter of his father's pride, little challenges kept coming at Mohatu and his family nearly non-stop.

Like all things in life, however, everyone had a choice: run from adversity or learn from it.

For Mohatu, the lessons he'd begun learning at Pride Rock were preparing him for the day when he might need to step up and bear the mantle of ruling a pride. Diplomacy, constantly needing to maintain an even-temper, and even charity were things he'd never faced before coming to the Pride Lands. Even if he didn't aspire to be a king, the Circle of Life tended to lead individuals to the role they needed to fill more than the one they wanted or expected to fill.
As he and his mate fled their former home, their only concern was survival and the birth of the coming litter. Planning anything beyond that would have been a waste of resources. After having found shelter at Pride Rock, Mohatu and Tetema end up at odds with one another about how best to proceed with their lives.

Mohatu seems content - or at least accepting - of the idea of remaining at Pride Rock, despite his insistence that he has no aspirations to be a king. His wariness at speaking with others is slowly fading as he grows more accustomed to being looked upon as the representative of his ragtag group of critters. Time is slowly dulling his pain, though the memories of the slaughter of his former pride are still as crystal clear to him as ever.

Tetema, burdened by the layered losses of her friends, family, and two-thirds of her litter, is far from content. The situations in which she and Mohatu find themselves have made her increasingly uncomfortable and it seems to be slowly driving a wedge between the two mates. The traumas the lioness has endured have also made it difficult for her to accept the fact that she has a role in the new life her family is forging.

Ahadi, having been born after the atrocities his parents had to endure, is growing up virtually care-free. Tending to make fast friends, he proves to be a source of frustration for his parents who want to focus on their small family and have no intention of building a pride. The young cub may prove to be the ultimate diplomat, though, if his ability to make friends one day leads to Mohatu's decision to form an official pride.

The trio encounters others on a pretty frequent basis. A few weeks after the thunderstorm which led to the "Great Kings" lesson, a young juvenile lioness arrived in the Pride Lands. Uru's origins are still sketchy - she hasn't seemed very willing to talk about her past or where she comes from and whether or not her parents live is still unknown to those with whom she has been staying.

Mishwasha has continued to perform dual roles for the nascent king. When Mohatu and his family sleep, the cheetah spends her time hunting for herself and prowling the boundaries of the Pride Lands - scouting for potential threats and other things of which Mohatu might need to be aware. When the family is awake - Ahadi specifically - the cheetah helps out by trying to keep an eye on the growing youth, but the recent addition of Uru to the group is proving challenging for both Mishwasha and the lions.

Just recently, another cheetah has arrived in the Pride Lands - Mishwasha's grandson. While Mohatu has granted the spotted feline permission to remain on and hunt within the Pride Lands, only time will tell whether or not the lion will continue to tolerate the male's presence.

Outside of the circle of Mohatu and Tetema's immediate circle, contact with the Kopje Valley pride has happened on several occasions, all of which were peaceful encounters that left both sides with more knowledge than they had before. The nature of the encounters left Mohatu feeling a little less worried about the safety of his family remaining at Pride Rock. The other pride seemed to accept the new residents and did not seem to pose a threat to the lion or his family.

Just as things seemed to be settling down, tensions spiked between Mohatu and Tetema. The two got into a veritable shouting match over any and every point of contention between the beleaguered pair. Mohatu's overwhelming concern revolved around Tetema's growing distance from both him and their son, while Tetema's enmity seemed to be rooted in her inability to cope with the massive amount of strife, terror, and anguish she's faced in recent months. Things remained unresolved as Tetema stalked off into the distance and left Ahadi with Mohatu, apparently assuming the male would be able to handle all of the cub's needs.

---

As Mohatu and Ahadi settle in and grow accustomed to life at Pride Rock, the rift continues to grow between the cub's parents. Tetema's absence is starting to wear on Mohatu and Ahadi keeps asking when his mother will return, but that's a question Mohatu just can answer. When he encountered the lioness while he was patrolling recently, the brief confrontation left him feeling dispair that his mate might not come home. Only time will tell how the lion's family will make it through the rough times that have beset them...

For many, conflict is a rare and unwelcome visitor in one's life. For others, however, it is an all too common companion on our journey through the Circle of Life.

In Mohatu's life, conflict seemed to follow him like a shadow on a cloudless day. The second of three sons born to a prosperous king, he frequently found himself playing family mediator between his older, headstrong brother and younger, carefree sibling. Nobody is perfect and the king was no exception. Showing strong favoritism for his first-born, he often left the two younger lions out of conversations and walkabouts, as he felt they'd never face the same situations their elder brother was destined to face.

The one bright spot in an otherwise teeth-grinding existence for Mohatu was his mate, Tetema. The daughter of a nomadic lioness who joined the pride several years earlier, Tetema was barely an adolescent when she met Mohatu. Though they initially fought more than siblings, love eventually grew between the two and they became mates shortly after reaching adulthood.

Bright spots have an unfortunate habit of being painfully brief. When Tetema became pregnant, Mohatu's father reacted with livid anger! He irrationally accused Mohatu of plotting to overthrow him and banished the two from the pride. As the pair bid goodbye to their pridemates, however, Mohatu's mother's wise words were able to calm the King enough to buy them a reprieve of sorts. Rather than banishment from his father's lands, Mohatu and his mate would merely be prohibited from entering the rocky, closed-ended canyon that served as the pride's home and sleeping area.

Prosperous kings rarely live quiet lives. Other prides compete for resources and wars break out from time to time when food grows scarce. One night as the pride lay sleeping, one such pride invaded their home and attacked without warning. The Prince was killed in the first attack and the king died shortly thereafter. The canyon was painted red with the blood of victims of the attack who found themselves with nowhere to go and nobody to turn to for leadership.

As luck would have it, his father's irrationality ended up being the only thing that saved Mohatu and Tetema from a bloody end. They slept nearby, but as luck would have it, on the night of the attack, the pair was downwind from the canyon and the attacking pride had no way of knowing Mohatu and Tetema weren't with their pride-mates when the rather one-sided battle broke out.

Awakened by the roars and other sounds of battle, Mohatu and his mate crept to the rim of the canyon only to catch sight of the last remnants of the fight - Mohatu's younger brother's throat being ripped out by an attacking lion. With a roar of anguish, Mohatu gave their presence away to the lions below, who immediately gave chase.

Running for your lives is never an easy task and it's made doubly difficult when your mate is pregnant. As the pair ran from the canyon, Mohatu realized they'd never outrun the attackers together. When they reached a river, he told Tetema to cross the rushing waters and continue without him while he ran along the river bank, intending to mislead those who were tracking the two. Though his intent was to double-back a short time later, he ended up taking hours longer than intended to retrace his steps to rejoin his mate.

The delay and the distance he was forced to detour made it impossible for Mohatu to locate Tetema's scent once he finally made it across the river. He was forced to spend days heading in the same general direction, hoping to catch up with his lost mate.

Tetema, meanwhile, had continued onward and eventually chose a point on the horizon to keep herself from circling back the way she had come. Only fear for the safety of her unborn cubs kept her on her path - it galled her that she couldn't turn back and help her mate or even find out if he lived!

Hours turned into days with barely a pause to hunt and keep hunger at bay, though stress was definitely taking a toll on her appetite. Slowly her chosen destination grew closer and despite having lost track of time, Tetema finally reached what turned out to be a huge monolithic rock formation in the middle of the savanna.

Never one to give up hope, Mohatu struck off in the same general direction. On his second night of travelling, fighting off waves of grief and guilt for not having done more to help save his family and pride-mates, Mohatu dreamt of his mother. In his dream, she spoke to him from the heavens - much as one of the Great Kings of the Past she'd often told him about when he was a cub - and told him to find the tallest peak on the horizon and to head for it. At first light, Mohatu awoke with that thought fresh in his mind and immediately set about trying to find such a sight. A cloudy day hindered his progress, but the next morning he awoke and was able to pick out the tallest peak on the horizon. As he headed for his chosen destination, he was overwhelmed with the fear that Tetema was dead and this was all for naught. Regardless, he perservered and refused to give up.

Unfortunately, the tallest point he'd chosen wasn't the same stone monolith Tetema had seen, but was rather a mountain a day or so from Tetema's destination. After a brief visit with a friendly pride of lions to recuperate a little, Mohatu headed out, determined to find his mate or die trying.

He struck off in the same direction he'd been heading before he found the friendly pride and in just a couple of hours spotted what could only be the 'tallest peak' he'd dreamed about. With renewed determination, Mohatu made the trek across the savanna in what some might consider record time. As he neared the strangely shaped formation of rocks, Mohatu caught scent of his mate. Overwhelmed with joy, he raced around a fall of rocks and skidded to a stop as he caught sight of his beloved - and their newborn cub.

Tetema lifted her eyes to meet her mate's gaze as he rounded the pile of stone, expression heavy with a sadness of such magnetude that even her the sight of her mate couldn't lift its weight. She cast her gaze around her in the hope that Mohatu would understand what had happened without her trying to put words to it.

Confused by her expression, Mohatu felt momentary joy as he spied three cubs at his mate's side. Fate quickly crushed the feeling as he realized only one was moving. Silently padding over, he leaned down and rested his forehead against Tetema's before silently setting about moving the stillborn cubs out of her sight and taking them some distance away from the rocks in the hopes that his mate would be able to rest better without being reminded of what the trek to their destination had cost the two young mates.

Mohatu silently squeezed past the boulders that nearly blocked the entrance to the huge cavern. He took a deep breath and slowly let it out, trying to shake off the heavy sadness he felt from having had to carry away the stillborn cubs. After a moment to let his eyes adjust to the darker cavern, Mohatu padded over to Tetema's side to lightly nuzzle her shoulder before he settled to his haunches and looked to his mate with quiet concern.

The lioness was in very poor shape. Prey was abundant in the grasslands surrounding the rock, but Tetema had a hard time catching anything substantial due to fatigue, weakness, and pregnancy. Though the pregnancy was no longer an issue, the fatigue and weakness was, now combined with the sadness of having lost two cubs. At least the cavern was more or less safe from intruders. At her side, the single surving cub slept soundly. In his sleep, he wiggled around a little, little paws reaching for the movements of two others he'd come to know, though he'll never find them again.

Tetema startled awake, taking several moments before she identified the additional adult in the cavern as her mate. "...I guess I didn't do a very good job, did I?" she asked tentatively.

Mohatu swallowed a sigh before he leaned closer to nose Tetema's cheek reassuringly. He spoke softly, voice deepened by his distress and sadness, "You're alive. And so is..." the lion trailed off, as he suddenly realized he had no idea what to call his ... And then he realized he didn't even know if it was a boy or a girl. Things had just happened too fast. He'd barely grasped the thought that he'd truly found his other half once again! Coppery eyes met Tetema's own and he finally finished his remark, "...our cub." Mohatu glanced around as he continued, "Seems like you found a good spot for the time being, too, 'tema."

"But... two of them died. Were already dead when they were born," the lioness countered after a breath. "And he's so weak, even now..." Tetema's head returned to her paws. "Hunting is so hard... Moving is hard. We can't fight, so hiding seemed the best thing to do," she said, sounding utterly hopeless.

Mohatu nodded even as he felt his heart break a little, knowing the pain he was feeling was nothing compared to Tetema's. He opened his mouth to reassure his mate once more, but froze, tensed, and then rose to his paws in an instinctively defensive motion all in the space of a heartbeat when he heard the noise of a curious cheetah as she found her way into the cavern. Apparently on a jaunt to explore unknown regions, she had inadvertently stumbled onto the grieving pair of lions in her adventures.

Mohatu stepped forward a pace or two, to place himself between his mate and cub and the potential threat. Thanks to having been in the cavern a bit longer than the new arrival, he was able to spot the cheetah and let loose a low, throaty growl of warning before she got so close that an altercation was inevitable, "Who's there?" he demanded, trying to sound authoritative, but failing miserably.

For a few tense minutes, the arrival and the battered and beaten pair of lions verbally sparred for awhile. Neither seemed to want to concede that they didn't lay claim to the lands, but caution drove them both to hedge their bets when dealing with unknowns. Both the lions and the cheetah found the other to be a new and odd experience, with the cheetah often speaking in rhyme or riddles, while the politics of leonine life frequently baffled the spotted feline.

---

Over the next days and weeks, the lions grew stronger and were able to hunt with more frequency. Their bodies filled out and Mohatu's ragged mane began to grow back in. Ahadi found his voice and started to explore his surroundings. The cheetah - known as Mishwasha - became a somewhat constant, if odd, companion of the trio of lions.

One evening, an unseasonally late thunderstorm rolled through the region and provided an excellent opportunity for Ahadi to be exposed to the Great Kings of the Past.

A loud clap of thunder, followed closely by a bright flash of lightening in the main cavern's entrance, caught the attention of the trio of lions and their cheetah companion. The thunder managed to shake a little bit of dust loose from somewhere above the heads of the group, while outside, the pitter-patter of rain splattered against rocks.

Mishwasha lay on the rocky floor of the cavern, gazing out into the evening rain as she enjoyed the shelter provided by the huge cavern. Over the weeks, trust had grown between the cheetah and Mohatu, and was probably the only reason she felt comfortable turning her back on the two larger felines.

Tetema was mildly interested in the storm outside, or at least where it was leaking into the cavern. Thankfully, it wasn't a large leak, but it was dripping pretty steadily into the cistern in the adjacent cave. "I wouldn't want to be on top of this rock with all of that lightning," she said.

Ahadi, who had been napping, was awakened by the boom of the thunderclap and as Mohatu was the nearest of the other three felines in the cavern, dove behind the larger lion to seek shelter from the storm.

His father, for his part, had also been napping but wasn't awakened until his son decided to use him as a hiding spot from the storm. The big lion sat up and opened his bleary eyes before he glanced back toward his son, "Wha?" He shook his head drowsily and glanced around the cavern as he tried to gather his wits.

Ahadi carefully crept his forepaws up Mohatu's flanks to his lower back before he peeked over the larger lion as best as he could. He stood on his father's tail to give himself a little more height. "Scawy!" he exclaimed with an underlining mewl, then dove back behind Mohatu, unwilling to face the scary light show for any longer than was necessary.

Mohatu glanced back down to where his son was crawling up along his back and chuckled softly. He blinked as another crack of thunder rattled the cavern and smiled reassuringly to his son as he softly spoke, "C'mere, Ahadi. It's just noisy, it won't hurt you." He glanced back up toward the ceiling as a bit of dust settled on his muzzle and hoped that wasn't an empty promise.

As Ahadi began creeping along his father's side toward the larger lion's forepaws, another lightning bolt struck somewhere outside and sent him scurrying over to his mother's protective embrace. Mohatu glanced down to his son and chuckled, "Ahadi.. It's okay. The Great Kings of the Past might be having a disagreement, but they never fight for long."

Ahadi peeked out from behind his mother's foreleg to gaze up to his father, "Gweat kings?" he asked. "Dey scawy! Da-dy scawr dem away?"

Mohatu chuckled softly and crouched down so he was relatively nose-to-nose with his son. "I can't scare them away, kiddo. The Kings are older and wiser than you or I. And a little out of reach," he added with a wry grin. "It'll be okay. Rain is good, anyway. It'll fill up the river and," at this point he glanced towards the cistern in the adjacent cavern, "our little pool of water, too."

One of Mishwasha's ears flicked when the cub voice spok the term, 'Great Kings.' It was both endearing as the cub stumbled with pronunciation and distressing. She knew about the Great Kings and it made her depressed more than anything. "At least we won't go thirsty," she remarked quietly to Mohatu's words, her sunken state of mind evident in her tone.

Tetema looked down at Ahadi and lowered her head to give the cub's forehead a couple of licks. "They're full of noise more than anything else," she said with a couple lashes of her tail as she glanced towards the cheetah, then the exit to the cavern, and finally looked back down at her son. "Sometimes you can't do much but wait until it goes away."

Ahadi peeked out a bit further. "Why noishy?" he asked, creeping out from his hiding spot. He gave a bit of a purr at his mother's licks and pressed up against her chin when she got close enough. "Dey hungwy?" From a cub's perspective it made sense. After all, cubs get noisy when they're hungry, right?

Mohatu chuckled softly as he sat back up and his tailtip flicked a time or two, "Mother always said they were noisiest when they were arguing over something important." A thought crossed his mind and his expression turned dark for the briefest of moments, but he appeared to decide not to share the thought with anyone as he quickly lost the darker bits of the expression on his face. Mohatu shrugged one shoulder, "I don't know if they're hungry or not, Ahadi. I've never spoken with them. If I do, I'll try and remember to ask." The lion shot Mishwasha a less-than-happy glance for a moment before he returned his gaze to Tetema to nod in agreement, "Waiting it out is usually the best."

"A lot of lions living together tend to roar. A lot. I guess you wouldn't say the Great Kings are living together, exactly... but there's a lot of them," Tetema elaborated a little bit more, a faint bit of wistfulness in her tone. "They'll eventually go back to sleep."

Ahadi tilted his head up to Mohatu. "Hungwy kings!" he giggled as daddy told him he'd check if they get hungry or not. He then tilted his head up to his mother. "Why dey wawr?" he asked, not quite getting the concept. Mohatu hadn't had to really roar since Ahadi's birth, so he wasn't not sure what it was. Which brought up his next question. "Wass wawr?"

Mohatu smiled to his son before he rose to his feet to start pacing around the circumference of the cavern. He didn't stop until he neared the only working entrance and peered out at the rain. He could see flashes of lightning in the distance, but the storm seemed to be settling down into a steady, calm downpour. He glanced over his shoulder to Tetema as his son asked about roaring, but as the cub was looking at his mother, the lion decided to let her field that pair of questions.

"Roar? It's a kind of noise lions make, usually when they're far apart and trying to find other lions, or a noise made to scare off someone they don't want around," Tetema explained. Given the closed quarters of the cavern, she really didn't feel like demonstrating.

At some point during Tetema's explanation, Ahadi had managed to drift off into a light catnap.

Mohatu couldn't help but chuckle as he shook his head and turned to slowly pad back over to Tetema, "I didn't want to go out into the rain just to demonstrate roaring anyway."

As the cub slept, the storm continued to bathe the Pride Lands with a steady, cleansing rain. Conversation faded as the evening wore on, the day coming to a calm close.

---

Days passed and as Ahadi grew more adventuresome, he began exploring the area around Pride Rock. If his parents weren't awake, the ever present cheetah - Mishwasha - became his defacto nanny as she accompanied the boy wherever he ventured outside of the main cavern.

Much to Mohatu and Tetema's consternation, however, this led to an encounter with a lioness and her cubs that Ahadi's parents wouldn't hear about until days later. As the story came to light, Mohatu's concerns about the family's safety in Pride Rock were brought forth once more. While their safety was always of paramount importance to the lion, reminders of the bloody demise of his father's pride would likely always cause Mohatu no small measure of sadness and fear.

OOC = Out-of-Character, he's just chit-chatting around.

LRP = Looking-For-Roleplay

and AFK, BRB..

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a MUCK?
A MUCK is a multi-user, text based, socially interactive, user-extendable role playing environment. Another way of looking at it is as a living book, of sorts. You connect with a client and interact with others, writing a new story as you go along. See the TinyMUCK entry on Wikipedia for more information.

What is a character?
A character is the username you use to connect to the MUCK. The first character you create becomes your primary character and establishes your account. An account can have more than one character assigned to it and the additional characters are called "alternate characters" or "alts" for short.

Can I have a character with a number or special symbol in the name?
No. Special symbols are not allowed because of systematic constraints and numbers are not allowed as a general policy. Just as you wouldn't meet a "John1 Smith" in real life, we don't wish our characters to be numbers, either.

Can I pick any name at all?
No. In order to preserve the theme of the muck, we do reserve the right to reject names that would be blatantly out of place (such as "Joe" or "Bob"). The list below offers several resources from which you can select Swahili words that would make excellent names. If in doubt, please page any on duty wizard or helpstaff member for assistance.
* https://africanlanguages.com/swahili/
* https://en.bab.la/dictionary/english-swahili/
* https://en.glosbe.com/en/sw/
* https://africanlanguages.com/swahili/index.php?l=en
* https://www.bing.com/translator/?from=en&to=sw
* https://translate.google.com/

How long does it take for my character request to be approved?
Processing requests is a manual procedure and is only done by the wizards. Our goal is to respond to requests within twenty-four hours, but occasionally that window will be larger. If you have been waiting more than twenty-four hours, feel free to contact a member of the Help Staff on the MUCK or [mailto:admin@tlkmuck.org email the administrators] to inquire about the status of your request.

Now that I have a character, how do I get started?
Check out Talfasi's excellent MUCK Intro Guide!

How do I change my email address?
Page or MUCKmail a wizard to request the change. Include both old and new email addresses for us to verify your identity against what is on file.

Why do I get disconnected after idling for forty-five minutes?
The MUCK administrators monitor the activity on the MUCK and use connection counts to determine how many users are active at any given moment. Idling needlessly skews our statistics in an undesirable manner, so the idle-boot policy was implemented.

How can I become a Help Staffer?
Page or MUCKMail Jioni and let her know you're interested!

How can I become a Wizard?
Wizards are added on an infrequent basis - usually only when another, existing wizard steps down. As a general rule, we do not accept requests to become a wizard and tend to keep track of those who have actively pursued a wizard bit. This is a policy of Ketekh's and is based on the premise that someone who wants to become a wizard isn't ready to be a wizard.

Why do you accept requests to join Help Staff but not requests to join the Wizard team?
Help Staff are a group of players who are willing and able to offer guidance to other players regarding MUCK-related issues. Wizards are players with a higher level of access to the MUCK and have the ability to perform actions not normally granted to other players(renaming/deleting others' objects, moving rooms/things/players that they do not own, etc) in order to help administer the rules and improve the MUCK. Because of this higher level of access (indeed, it's possible to shut the muck down if you're a wizard, but only Ketekh and Danur have access to restart it!), wizards are more selectively chosen.
Notes
Users behind a router that uses Network Address Translation (NAT) may find that their connections seem dropped several minutes of idleness. This is not due to the standard "idle boot" setting of the muck (which will disconnect you with the message "Autodisconnecting for inactivity." after 45 minutes of no activity), but rather as a result of how NAT works.

Most clients have a 'send keep alive packet' setting that will help prevent the dead connections. To configure MUSHClient (v.4.44 and newer), follow these instructions:
*Make sure scripting is enabled for the connection in question and is set to LUA.
*Use CTRL+I to open the Immediate window.
*Paste the following into the Immediate window:
check (SetOption ("send_keep_alives", 1))
*Click "Run".
*Click "Close".
*Save the world file.
You can use the Immediate window to verify the setting has been updated. Follow the instructions above, but paste the following into the Immediate window, instead of the 'SetOption' command from above:
*print ("keep alives =", GetOption ("send_keep_alives"))
This should return the following:
keep alives = 1

Now you should remain connected up to the 45 minute idle-boot timeout, which is a part of the MUCK's configuration.

See the original post on gammon.com.au for a more in-depth discussion of this option.

v4.1 - 02/09/2020

Overview
This policy was created to form a framework for managing prides, which form the core of the MUCK's concept. These rules are updated occasionally to meet the changing needs of the MUCK's playerbase.

Of note, while the wizards realize the title of King is traditionally gender specific and applied to adult male lions, the words King and Queen are interchangeable with the world Ruler as described below. Many other arrangements (co-Kings, co-Queens, Queen leadership with a lion consort, and other variants) are welcome as well. If in doubt, ask the wizards!

Requirements to be a Ruler
#Any adult lion or lioness who gathers the support of three additional adult leonines of either gender may apply to be a Ruler. For co-Ruler situations, one additional "supporting" leonine is required. There are no restrictions to the number of Rulers the MUCK can have at any given time. Only adults can be Rulers. Cubs, juveniles, and adolescents are not qualified.
#The applicant(s) and the supporting characters must all be different players. Alternates of one another will not be accepted to fulfill these requirements. In other words, a pride must be formed of four (or more) separate players.
#The applicant(s) must not have any serious previous infractions of MUCK rules.
#The applicant(s) must not have previously been a Ruler whose pride was disbanded three times.
#The applicant(s) must connect an average of ten hours a week over a rolling six week period. Additionally, the supporting members of the applying group must connect an average of ten hours a week over a rolling six-week period. The wizards will examine connection times to verify the applicant(s) has/have been connecting often before applying. Connecting and idling will not be an acceptable method of accruing time online. We will monitor idling. Failing to actively seek out roleplay while online will be grounds for disqualification of the application, although concurrent connections of other players will be taken into account as we realize you cannot role play by yourself.

Exceptions to the above requirements may be made at the Administrators' discretion. If you have questions, please page any on-duty Wizard.

How to become a Ruler
Any adult lion or lioness who has the support of three other players as described above can apply to become a Ruler. As mentioned above, there are no restrictions on how many Rulers the MUCK can have at any given time.

There are no predefined induction periods, but please allow up to two weeks for the administrators to review the application and respond.

To apply to be a Ruler, gather the support of three separate players as described above. Each character cannot currently support or be another Ruler and must be played by different players. Send a muckmail to Ketekh or an email to Ketekh_AT_tlkmuck.org listing your interest in applying and the names of the supporting characters.

All members must be active on the MUCK. Their connection times will be averaged with the applicant's to determine whether the applicant qualifies to be a Ruler.

Your application will be processed and you will be notified whether or not your application has been approved within two weeks.

After Induction
Rulers will be able to begin building their lands immediately after being inducted. Do not begin building your lands prior to this point. Circumstances may call for leniency due to succession planning and land takeovers. Consult with the wizards to discuss an exception before violating this rule.

Violating the building rule can be grounds for rejecting your application or prohibiting you from qualifying in the future.

Connection and idle times will be monitored on a regular basis. If you fall below the required connection times, you will receive a warning the first time and be given a two-week grace period to correct the situation. If it has not been corrected after the grace period is over, or if this is not the first offense, your pride will be disbanded and you will have to reapply.

If your pride is disbanded three times, you will be disqualified from re-applying with that character.

Co-Rulers, Queens, and Heirs
Each pride may have up two leaders, one leader and one "consort" (a queen if the ruler is a king and vice versa, for example) and a line of succession, though none of these positions are mandatory (known hereafter as the leadership of the pride). The leadership players must not have any serious infractions of MUCK rules and must be approved by the wizards prior to a character being granted leadership status.

Pridal leadership members are subject to the same rules as the Ruler, thus each character must connect an average of ten hours per week over a six week rolling period or they will lose their status. The loss of a leadership member will not result in the disbanding of a pride, merely the character's return to regular status.

While members of the line of succession are not considered leadership positions from a role-play perspective (as they're merely "next in line" for Leadership), they must still meet the requirements above in order to be granted Ruler status when the current Ruler of a pride steps down. Note that being added to the line of succession does not guarantee a Ruler title, and a Ruler may change his/her line of succession prior to stepping down.

Multiple Rulers
Prides can have multiple Rulers, but all must meet the requirements listed above except for the number of supporters required to qualify as a pride.

For each additional Ruler, a pride is required to gain the support of one additional leonine of either gender, beyond the initial supporting character requirements of a lone Ruler. A pride with two Rulers, for example, is required to have four additional leonine supporters to qualify for pride status. Since multiple Rulers are considered to be a single ruling entity, characters belonging to the players of either Ruler will not count towards this total.

Leading Multiple Prides
Players cannot Rule more than one pride at a time. Given the relatively low average connection count, Feature Characters are an exception to this rule. In other words, an existing Ruler could be accepted to play Simba during the casting process if they are determined to be the best candidate for the role and they continue to comply with all requirements for their Ruler character.

Reasons for disbanding prides (removing the Ruler's title)
# OOC Harassing another player for any purpose, be that trying to force them to join, to roleplay a certain way, to react to the Ruler a certain way, etc. NO OOC harassment will be tolerated!
# Any serious infraction of the rules.
# Failure of the minimum members of the pride, including the Ruler, to maintain an average of ten hours a week over a rolling six-week period and roleplaying most of that time.
# Failure to maintain the minimum number of supporting leonine pride members any one time with each leonine from a different player.

Items 1 and 2 can include disqualification of future applications for Rulership.

Items 3 and 4 include disqualification of future applications for Rulership if the infraction is the third infraction by that Ruler or his/her pride.

Disbanding can occur at any time. If your pride is disbanded and you are not disqualified from reapplying, you can reapply for Kingship immediately.

If you have any questions, muckmail Ketekh or email ketekh_AT_tlkmuck.org.
15,000

This is the mbox or multi namespace message box meta-template.

This meta-template is used to build message box templates that are used on several types of pages and thus need to change style depending on what page they are used on. Based on page type detected it uses one of ambox, tmbox, imbox, cmbox and ombox.

Note that this template should only be used for message boxes that really need to adapt their style. Most message boxes do not need this and should use one of ambox, tmbox, imbox, cmbox or ombox directly. Using those templates directly means that your template will look the same on its template page and at any other place you show it, which makes it clear on what kind of pages it is supposed to be used. It also gives you access to any extra features those templates offer, and it saves some server load.

Usage
This template takes the same parameters as ambox and imbox etc. See full documentation there.

Some of the boxes this template calls only handles images of max 52px width, thus that limitation also applies to this template or you will get ugly padding problems.

Demospace
This template optionally takes the "demospace" parameter to specify a namespace for testing and demonstration purposes. If you want to lock your message box to one style then instead use one of the other mboxes directly.

Namespace "Image:" was renamed to "File:" on 11 December 2008. This template was updated to understand both names well before that, thus it still works fine. For backwards compatibility it still understands "demospace = image" which means the same thing as "demospace = file". But using "demospace = image" is now deprecated.

Namespace "Book:" was added to the English Wikipedia on 28 December 2009. This template uses the ombox style on "Book:" pages or when "demospace=book". And it uses the tmbox style on "Book talk:" pages or when "demospace=talk". Note that "demospace=talk" means any talk space, there is no "demospace=book talk".

Parameters
List of all parameters:

{{mbox
| demospace = {} / main / talk / file / category / other
| type = speedy / delete / content / style / notice / move / protection
| image = none /
| imageright =
| style = CSS values
| textstyle = CSS values
| text = The message body text.
| small = {} / left / yes
| smallimage = none /
| smallimageright = none /
| smalltext = A shorter message body text.
}}

Note: The small parameters only have effect when the template is on an article, talk page or an "other" page. For documentation on the small parameters see ambox, tmbox and ombox. Using the small parameters when they are not valid has no effect, but also does no harm.
{{Documentation|content=

This is the high-risk message box. It is meant to be put at the top of the documentation page on the most high-use (high-risk) templates and Lua modules (the template detects the name space), i.e., for templates used on a large number of pages

Usage
The template can be used as is.
But it can also take some parameters:

* First parameter is the number of pages.
* Second parameter is the name of some other talk page if you want discussion to be made there instead. But a better option might be to redirect the talkpage of your template to that other talkpage.

Examples
30,000+

The full code for a /doc page top may look like this:

documentation subpage

30,000+

Technical details
The /sandbox and /testcases links are the standard names for such subpages.
If those pages are created then the green /doc box for the template will detect them and link to them in its heading.
For instance see the top of this documentation.
